Families, families, families by Suzanne Lang

This book uses animals to show us that there is no 'normal' family. Each page shows another family, framed and hanging on the wall. Small families and big families. Single parent families and families with aunties, uncles and grandparents. Same sex families. Adopted families. Mixed families. A beautiful depiction of what our world looks like today. But with cartoon animals.

Families discussion - Age 4+
This style activity is often used in classrooms, but there is no reason it can't be used to lead a discussion at home too. After reading this book, ask your children to think about what families have or who makes up a family. Where do they live? Our favourite though is asking children to finish the sentence 'Families are...' because they often come up with some beautiful answers (eg. love, safe, everything).
