The Iridescence of Birds: A Book About Henri Matisse by Patricia MacLachlanThe early life of Henri Matisse is explored in this story, set in a Northern France coal mining town. Matisse was surrounded by dreary buildings and grey skies, so his mother filled their house with flowers and colour. As well as learning about a rather famous artist, this was the main message to take away from this story. Sometimes you have to make your own colour and find your own happiness. A good addition to any art unit or study.
