Lego Mixels by Shari Last
The selection of early readers you can get these days is amazing. There are so many themes that kids love and that helps build an interest in reading (obviously!). If only every classroom could be filled with these! They are especially great for some of the reluctant readers in older grades who aren't gaining anything by being given books that 'look' like they are for younger kids.
This book features the Lego line of 'Mixels' who are a mishmash of made up characters. It is fabulous for encouraging kids to think outside the box and build silly, crazy looking creatures. Scroll down for:

Building everyday objects - Age 4+
Kids are so good at building objects to use in role play (ships or cars or people). Try challenging them to build something functional that they could use everyday. Before a recent birthday party, my 5 year old built a cutlery holder. After the party we thought about different ways we could use it in the house, rather than destroy it right away. |
- Bring out LEGO and have kids create their own Mixels then write descriptions of them. Make posters to advertise them. Design a box to sell them. Write a story starring your own Mixel.
