My Mom is a Firefighter by Lois G Grambling

This story provides a nice peek into life at a fire station and lets you imagine what it would be like growing up there. Billy's mom is a firefighter, so he spends a lot of time at the station with his second family. He knows when and where he can help out and when he needs to step back and give them space to work. The final page summarises the best part of the book, when Billy explains what he wants to be when he grows up - "Just like mom". It is a refreshing change to see a young male character looking up to his mother for her working role, not just her nurturing role as mom.

Role play & sensory play - Age 1+
There are examples of this type of activity all over Pinterest, for good reason. You can grab a toy (that washes up easily), cover it in shaving cream, drop a few fire colours over it (either food colouring or paint) and then set your little firefighter upon it! Leave it as an invitation to play or ask them for help putting the fire out and start role playing with them. Water bottles are great exercise for little hands. When they get tired of squirting, they will most likely dive in hands first. Leaving a bowl of water close by is helpful for cleaning up any small toys and hands too!

Puzzle making - Age 2+
Making your own puzzle is super simple and means you can tailor them to your child's current interest and ability level. We like to cut up colouring pages or just drawing our own pictures. You can add numbers or words/sounds to each piece and laminate them if you want them to last a bit longer. Start with just 2 pieces for young ones and increase the number of pieces as they grow!
