The Noisy Paintbox by Barb Rosenstock

This story follows a young Russian boy named Vasya. After receiving his first box of paint, he mixes colours and hears them 'hisssss'. He proceeds to paint what he can hear, for he sees music in the colours. His family wants him to paint 'like everyone else' and eventually push him into a legal career. Many years later he returns to painting and begins to share his unconventional work with the world. He ultimately becomes the father of abstract art - Kandinsky. Abstract art (and this story) is perfect for children because there is freedom in it. This is a great starter story for introducing children to the world of art and artists.
