The Rules of the House by Mac Barnett
This is a perfect spooky story for Halloween. If you have kids under 3 that don't like scary stories, you might want to wait a year to read this one! The book follows a brother and sister who are heading on vacation to a house in the woods. After breaking all the house rules, some of the household objects (a bear rug, a bathtub and a wood stove) come to life and decide to punish the rule breaking sister. Luckily her brother comes to her rescue!

Animation activity - Age 2+
Want to combat the idea of scary furniture coming to life? Try cutting out some large (cute!) eyes and turn things in your own home into friends. Pop some tape on the back, stick them on a chair or table or box and say hello! Your kids will quickly join in and have a chat too or offer up some ice cream (that is always a repeating theme in our role play for some reason!). How many things in your house can you 'animate'?
Read about when we originally shared it on Instagram - HERE
- Write a character comparison for the brother and sister (why do you think they are so different?)
- Write your own scary story modeled on this one, with objects that come to life
- Have a class discussion about telling the truth and where you draw the line with lying
