Snow by Sam Usher

If you are a fan of Quentin Blake's illustration style, than this book will be right up your ally.  It is in fact written and illustrated by Sam Usher. The story revolves around an impatient child who has his mind set on getting out in the snow first.  His grandfather is taking his time getting ready and the boy watches (or imagines what he is missing) as people and animals all head out before him. In the end they get to the park just at the right time and by the end, both the granddad and boy agree that some things are worth waiting for.

Print matching - Age 2+
As the characters in the book pass by the boy, they leave trails of footprints across the snow. This a perfect opportunity for a little matching game with some play dough (or head out in the real snow!). Grab a selection of toys (only a couple for younger kids but add more to challenge older ones) and any dough you have. If you have some snowy white dough, even better! Ask your child to turn away for a minute (if they will!) and mark a few trails with toy feet. You can get an older child to help set it up too. Ask little ones if they can find who made the marks. This is great for visual discrimination - noticing small details and comparing.  Also - it ends with some play dough time, which is always a winner.

Letter matching - Age 2+
If your little person is showing an interest in the alphabet or reading letters (which they might do earlier on if they have older siblings who are reading), then activities involving any alphabet toys you have will be a big hit. Try taking a favourite book (short titles are best) and get them to match the title letters with their toys (alphabet blocks, magnets, cards, cookie cutters, etc). As they handle the letters, remind them of the sound it makes. A lot of kids learn letter names first but it is the initial sound the letters make that is important for early learners.
